Its 1993 remix album became the first album by a singer to have a rapper on every song, popularizing rap as a featuring act. In 1992, Blige released her debut album, What's the 411?, which is credited for introducing the mix of R&B and hip hop into mainstream pop culture. Her career began in 1991 when she was signed to Uptown Records. She has been nominated for three Golden Globe Awards and two Academy Awards, including one for her supporting role in the film Mudbound (2017) and another for its original song " Mighty River", becoming the first person nominated for acting and songwriting in the same year. Often referred to as the " Queen of Hip-Hop Soul", Blige has won nine Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards, and ten Billboard Music Awards. She doesn't get enough credit for it.Mary Jane Blige ( / b l aɪ ʒ/ born January 11, 1971) is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, and actress. Glad they consistently highlighted Mary's talent as a songwriter. She said "everyone has a story to tell, and maybe I didn't go to Harvard but my story still matters" I think she perfectly described all the reasons why Mary is so important. I understand that it was all about the 'My Life' album but no mention of her marriage or anything was a bit odd. I felt like they didn't touch a lot of her relationship with KC but that also might have been for legal reasons. Maybe because it wasn't covered in national magazines or the press wasn't hounding her so it went unnoticed? I don't think I realized how depressed Mary was and how bad her issues with drugs and alcohol were. I think they did a really good job of explaining WHY so many people, especially Black women, relate to and have a special fondness/respect for Mary. I wish they would have shown more footage of her in the studio and went into more depth about all the songs on the album. I wish Amazon had done a better job of promoting this because I feel like it isn't being discussed very much. And I thought this was going to span her entire career, I didn't realize the focus would be centered on that album.īut the doc was pretty good - it was more emotional that I was expecting.
